Let's tab Alesund!

Favorite song of the album.  I was going to wait for it to be tabbed, but... no one was tabbing!  So I started tabbing it out last night, and got some results.  I'm going away for four days (and unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to bring a guitar!), so I thought I'd post what I have so far, and see if it stirs others into adding their own input.

First of all, I think it's in DADEAD, though the high D might be something else.  Second, I think it is basically very similar to the instrumental portion of Trailways, except he only fingerpicks the high strings after the middle of the three bass notes, if you know what I'm saying.  Here's what I think is going on:

Of course, that's just the thing for the first part of the verse ("No, this is not my guitar/ I'm bringing it to a friend").  The only real tricky part is skipping the middle bass note of the fourth and eighth measures.  At the moment I don't quite have the time or the resources (I don't have a guitar on me) to figure out/post the next parts, but they follow pretty easily.  As you may have guessed, right now I myself am just concerned with the meat of the song, not the intro/outro, though eventually I hope to figure out how the devil to play those as well; so if you feel like discussing that, awesome!  Any help is great, and maybe there's someone out there who is as eager as I am to learn and practice this song; not only to be able to play it, but also to learn more guitar skills from it.

I think you are right on the voicing, except it is one half step down on the record.  Actually, I couldn't decide if the 3 string was D# (or Eb, whatever) or if it was F, either way, playing it with F only involves minor changes to the following.  I changed the tab to how I think it goes, but I am not really sure, yours may be more correct.

It's in 3/4, so getting that 2 and 3 beat to sound good really takes some technique (which I can't fully execute myself), but I am pretty sure if you can nail it then this should sound right.  I am not sure if he plays up the next instead...I tried to listen for fret slides on the recording but couldn't tell if I was hearing it or not.

AH!  I just realized that I basically tabbed out the same thing for the verse part, just with different fret positions for a couple notes....and then just flat out repeated what you tabbed with the last bar I added as an alternate!  Oh well smile

Although, I think my way might be a slight improvement, at least for the way I play it, since it effectively mutes the notes that appear in the 4th and 8th bars, so that they don't sound early. 

Yeah this is my favorite song off the album and is really fun to play and sing.  If you tune the 3 string to F, you can play with chords starting at the 9 fret and just go down the neck.  That makes it easier and thus more fun to play if you are lazy like me!

I'm working on a full tab right now with intro, interlude and all.

I think it's C# G# C# D# G# C, the highest string being half a step lower than expected. I've slowed the song down in Logic Pro and listened to it and that's what it sounds like. Also I think the first chord is way up there on the neck :

pierre, you gotta be spot on with the positioning of the chords...i watched closely in chicago to this song and he starts high up the neck and works the progression down...this is great man! pretty sure the tuning is spot on, too.

I think that tuning is right, FYI. In Chicago, he went straight from Alesund into Moorestown (he stopped for a moment, but not to tune his guitar). According to blueguitar.info, the tuning for Moorestown is CGCDGB with a capo on the 4th fret (which is the tuning Pierre uses, a half-step down).

While I am proud of the work I accomplished on this song in 20 minutes, I'm grateful to all those who helped refine it, and especially to Pierre who tabbed everything out for us.  I just got home last night and I've been playing it practically nonstop.  After a good bit of practice, I expect I'll be able to do it fluently (to the point where I can improvise around it); but I know that, at least right now, I just would never have the stones to write something like this.  Awesome.

Awesome.  This whole album is a challenge to figure out and learn, and I hope to, as they roll in, learn each song to expand the horizons, so to speak, of my guitar.

I'm planning to get some opening strides on Sam Wong Hotel and The Leaning Tree (as you can see, opening strides are all I got for Alesund), so if anyone has any insights into these two-- or any of the songs, as well, obviously-- perhaps we all can work together for the greater good.

the album version is for sure tuned differently than posted above. if you listen closely you'll hear that the 5th (G#) string is actually an (A#). i'm not speaking to any live versions, only noted this on the album recording.  thankfully, this does not complicate the rest of the tab, and all open notes on the mentioned string should sound fine and better tuned up a step
