Happy 3rd Birthday!

I registered sunkilmoon.com in early September 2003 after reading about Mark's new music project of the same name.  Surprisingly, the domain wasn't taken.

I spent a couple of months building the site, and on November 3, 2003 (the day "Ghosts of the Great Highway" came out), the site went live and I posted it to the Mistress list.

Although I clearly noted that this site is an unofficial site, I was being linked to from online music magazines left and right in their reviews of "Ghosts." This quickly pushed me up in the Google ranking when searching for "Mark Kozelek" and "Sun Kil Moon."

The forum began to grow with new members daily and everything was going great.. that is, until Mark's lawyer contacted me in early 2004.

With an email in cryptic legal speak, it sounded like he wanted me to take down the forum and hand over the domain to Mark, since I didn't own the name and had no right to use it.

After a few emails back and forth, his lawyer and I finally chatted on the phone to clear up what exactly he wanted: give up the domain name sunkilmoon.com and remove the taping/trading portion of the forum.  Even though I explained that no money was being made with the taping/trading of live shows, he wouldn't budge, so I obliged and removed it.

As for the domain, I proposed for them to make my site the official site and I'll maintain it for free. I would be the webmaster and do all updates, etc. But the lawyer said Mark had plans for a real website already.

After throwing some domain names around (krazykoz.com, waterkill.com), I decided on sadreminders.com on April 9, 2004.

The site has survived being hacked and defaced when it was using phpbb in 2004 (and again with this software in 2005), and Mark referring to us as "sad whiners," but it's still going!

Here's the first version of the site, sans images.

And version 2.

As is tradition, I'm working on a new version of the site to be up soon.

Thanks to everyone for 3 great years and here's to 3 more! smile

Re: Happy 3rd Birthday!

It's been a bumpy ride, huh. smile Definitely worthwhile though. This website is definitely the ultimate MK resource on the web... Keep up the good work!

Re: Happy 3rd Birthday!

Obviously a labor of love.  It's a terrific site, and you should be very proud of it.  I would definitely miss it if it weren't around.  Thank you for all your hard work in maintaining it.  It is very appreciated.

Absolutely Mr (Sad) Lament, I don't care what the rest of them say....I think you're okay (kidding). Perhaps Mark could bake you a big cake and get someone to sing Happy Birthday a la Marilyn Munroe (sic) for JFK.

Re: Happy 3rd Birthday!

I´m a member for a little more than a year now. When I registered, I became member No. 500...which was pretty cool.
I have never seen a better organized and more informative fan site on the internet. It´s such a melting pot of ideas and opinions. I´m not an internet nerd but there are two things I have to check everyday: my email and the news on sadreminders.com...
Thanks for doing it and thanks for letting me be a sad whiner...

Oh, and by the way: have you named yourself after the Cure song, Lament?

Re: Happy 3rd Birthday!

I agree with the above. I have tried to see whats up on other sites and they are very boring and the topics are as about lame as can be. Without this site it would be hard to get my geek on!
A big thumbs up to you Jason!

Cheers!

Re: Happy 3rd Birthday!

Cool! It´s one of my favourite songs... The "Japanese whispers"-version is great...the original Flexi Pop- version is unlistenable...
