Searched for The Cure thread and surprised it does not exist. We must not have talked about them since the old forum days! Anyway, new Cure album and live DVD releases due this year. YES!

And the trilogy concerts I've been waiting for/dreaming of - The Top, Head and Kiss Me!
Yeah @chrisjg all three or should that be four albums are fantastic and on another forum I was sticking up for The Top a hugely under-appreciated release often referred to as the runt of the litter as if it were a dog that should be blackbagged n drowned.NOOOOOOOOO I say as Banafishbones,Shake Dog Shake and highlight Piggy in the Mirror are fantastissimo.Is there any band on the planet that has the wide spectrum of moody moodswings and eccentic pop at its most magnificent.I know our glorious leader is a big Cure-head....Lament I mean not Mark.
Hell yeah - it took me years to get into The Top, but now it's one of my favourite bits of musical lunacy! Head on the Door was the album that got me into the band and 28 years later I still love them. Who else would I spend £224 on two concert tickets for?

Pretty excited.. been way too long since 4:13 Dream. And way too long since I've seen them live.
I'm still waiting for the next set of remastered albums though.. Wish especially. At this rate it's the 22nd Anniversary Edition..

I'd like a Wish remaster even though the superb b-sides were remastered already on the Join The Dots box set. I often play those 6 tracks and think of them as a mini-alnum.
4:13 Dream was a big disappointment, The self-titled LP was good but spoiled by poor production by 'Mr Nu-metal' Ross Robinson. Wild Mood Swings was a funny era because (as with other Cure records) some b-sides were better than the tracks that made the final album cut. I've actually made my own versions of WMS and The Cure, replacing the tracks I disliked with better b-sides, thus turning them into 2 excellent albums, IMHO of course!
I must say though that The Top is one of my least favourites. It's The Cure's 'Among The Leaves' as far as I'm concerned. I know Smith was on all kinds of stuff when he wrote it so that explains it a bit. I pretty much like the 3 songs Mr Hanky mentions and little else on that record. If I went to that Trilogy gig I would walk in 40 minutes late I think!
oh there's a few Wish rarities that need proper CD releases.. mainly the 4 instrumental tracks on the Lost Wishes cassette, the extended 12" promo of Letter to Elise.
Plus the unreleased songs from those sessions: Heart Attack, Old England, that 20-minute slow version of Friday I'm in Love that Robert says exists.

As per my earlier comment, I wanted to share the playlists I made for 'Wild Mood Swings' and 'The Cure' as I believe the b-sides were way better than some of the album tracks, some of which were utterly terrible (Round & round & round, Never)
Give these a go and see what you think, makes said eras far more listenable for me anyway.....

Huge Cure fan ever since 1982's Pornography. It's still my favourite Cure album mainly because I was 10 at that time and that album made me aware of how much beautiful non-commercial music could be. Saw them twice, in 1989, and I believe I've still got the tour t-shirt somewhere, and in 1992 during the Wish tour, however Simon was sick so they had to use a stand in bass player(Phil Thornalley). Didn't see them again after that because I simply hate big stadium tours, and if I'm being honest, both times I saw them I was way way back and barely saw anything.
Out of all the albums The Cure have released, only 2 stand out as very poor - Wild mood swings and 4.13 Dream.Don't know why, but I kinda expected Wild Mood to be a poor effort and so it proved to be, however I had high hopes for 4.13 but alas I was very disappointed.
Give me the Seventeen Seconds-Faith-Pornography trilogy anytime. All masterpieces imo, although I have a lot of time too for The Top, Kiss Me, Disintegration and Wish. Some of my non-album favs are Splintered in her head, Descent, Lament, Just one Kiss, This Twilight garden and A japanese dream.
I think Disintegration is solid all the way through.
Speaking of Disintegration, I remember I went out and bought the lp, then after a couple of days, I heard some guy talking about Last Dance, and I remember asking this guy what the hell he was talking about because there were no tracks called Last Dance on the album. Ah he said, you bought the vinyl not the cd version! So, I immediately went to the store again to buy the cd. Nowadays, extra tracks are normally found only on the lp. How things change!
But one thing that really irked was when the record companies were "rewarding" mp3 buyers by giving them extra tracks, when I always believed that any extra tracks should be given to the physical lp/cd buyers not the other way round.
Saw them a few years back at the hurricane festival in germany. Had really discovered them just a year before that and was mesmerized by how much fun robert smith had on stage. And I remember an older guy, probably 45 (sorry folks, I'm 21^^), next to me who started to cry during Pictues of You. That's still stuck in me...
They played much of Disintegration. Still one of my favorite albums and I'd say the lyrics are his best. Haven't really gotten into other albums by them (except Pornography).
Fascination Street and Love Song would be enough to make it a great album.
Yet again it must be said that the 6 Wish b-sides are incredible. Wild Mood Swings era is good for me IF you take into account the b-sides. Otherwise its not a great listen, the album track listing they chose. They left some of their better songs of the time off that record.

I've seen em twice, first one was Hyde Park in either 2001 or 2003, it was their 25th anniversary concert. Mogwai opened. Unforgettable experience with fireworks at the end. Second time was Coachella 2004, which was also superb! My favourite set of the festival, and that's saying a lot if you see the lineup for that year (Radiohead, Pixies, Flaming Lips, Belle & Sebastian, Kraftwerk, Beck, etc etc)
do they play same deep water rarely? - definitely have to get more into the b-sides. lament is a great song. now I'm rediscovering the cure, koz has taken up too much time the last few years.
There's only one thing I don't like about The Cure, and that's the set list, especially at festivals. Quite naturally, they play a lot of their hit singles in an effort to please the crowd, and in doing so, they end up neglecting a lot of their strongest work. A lot of Cure fans will tell you their album tracks are better than the singles. Take Disintegration for example, the best tracks aren't Lullaby or Love Song, but songs like Prayers for rain, Same Deep water and Plainsong. Likewise Kiss me Kiss me, tracks like The Snakepit, All I want, One more time and Torture are better songs than Catch, Hot hot hot and Why can't I be you.
Don't get me wrong, I love The Cure and I like their singles/hit songs too, except the singles off Wild mood swings and 4.13 dream
, but I believe they can afford to play for themselves rather than for the crowd, and stop playing crowd favourites like Wrong number.
Agree about the sets being heavy on the hits. Give me The Same Deep Water As You, The Figurehead, The Drowning Man, Siamese Twins and If Only Tonight We Could Sleep over the singles anyday. I'd love to see them do a tour where the fans vote for the setlist each night like I think Pearl Jam did. Check out their b sides collection Join The Dots, the only box set you will ever need!

Agreed..I saw them in Napa a few months ago at the Bottle Rock Festival, and the setlist was a pretty good mix for both hardcore and casual fans, but definitely leaned towards the pop singles.

Yeah, The Top is vastly underrated, and I don't know why. It's got several strong tracks, with perhaps only 1 or 2 that I classify as average. The critics say that it doesn't 'flow' as an album and it's got the feel of a compilation, but I strongly disagree.
